Decentralized renewable energy – key to a global energy transition – 27th March 2023
On 27th March 2023, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is hosting an event in Berlin to share experiences, successes and expertise in its support for decentralized renewable energy in Sub-Saharan Africa. The ministry’s initiative Green People’s Energy for Africa was launched in 2017 and aims to contribute to universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services (SDG7).
If SDG7 is to be achieved in Africa by 2030, it would require providing access to energy for 235,000 people every day. In Sub-Saharan Africa, over 800 million people still lack access, especially in remote regions. Decentralized renewable energy can play a pivotal role in achieving a global energy transition. It is key to climate-neutral economic growth and healthier livelihoods in rural areas. Access to energy can massively improve living conditions of people in rural areas, by enabling conditions for local business and creating jobs.
In the past five years, the BMZ initiative Green People’s Energy for Africa has been working to establish decentralized and off-grid energy access in rural areas of Africa to support such a transition. It has built a unique network of partners, leaders, visionaries, professionals and citizens who have all contributed to making SDG7 a reality – for the future of their communities.
Join the BMZ Green People’s Energy Initiative in Berlin on 27th March 2023 – a partner event of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue – to experience the impact of development cooperation approaches and discuss how decentralized renewable energy access can be brought to scale in Africa.
